GALLE FORT FIELDVISIT.

On 15th of October in this year, we visited to Galle fort as a study tour for our module “Heritage in planning”.

It was a sunny-day.We started our field visit around 7.30 am from our University. All of my badge mates have participated for this. Specially our loving lecturer Mr.K.D.Fernando also joined with us. We reached to Galle within two hours by using southern highway.city,

After entered to Galle city, firstly we visited to the Roomassala hill and jungle beach. It was a pleasant seeing for me.I could see Galle city and the sea clearly and nicely from the top of Roomassala hill. After spent few minutes there, we come back to bus. And also I didn’t forget to capture some sceneries of jungle beach to my camera. After that again we started our journey to Galle fort from Roomassala.

Within few minutes, we could reach to Galle fort .After entered to the Galle fort we divided to our groups and we started our study within the sites which have given early.
Church Street, Church cross street and light house street are the major streets which were in my study area.

Firstly we walked along those streets. We had to observe present uses, architectural features, activities and also about streets-cape about the particular area. Under those topics I could learn lot of special features which are related to Dutch and British period in Sri Lanka by visiting to Galle fort. Some of them are endemic for the Galle fort and we can’t see them anywhere else.

Ramparts, light house, Galle national museum, Maritime museum, Galle fort hotel and Amangalla hotel are some special places which caught my heart within Galle fort. Architectural features which are endemic for the Dutch and British period are the most interesting thing which I saw there. I tried to imagine the “Galle fort in British period” by looking above mentioned things.

After finish our study within given site, we sit on the rampart and had our lunch. I started to walk around the Galle fort with my best friends. It was the funniest time of the day. We walked along the ramparts of the Gall fort. I enjoyed lot with my friends. We went to the beach and enjoyed lot. After enjoying few hours on the beach, we came to the bus for return to the university. That was the ened of our Galle fort study tour.
That was my first experience in Galle and Galle fort. I really enjoyed that day and also I could learn lot of valuable things such as building patterns, architectural features and etc about Galle fort. That was a another unforgettable day in my life.
